Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. A Hasidic Jewish woman from Brooklyn has just earned herself a seat on the New York Supreme Court. Just before 2022 came to a close, Rachel Freier received an email letting her know that she'd been appointed as an acting New York state Supreme Court justice. Freier, a mother of six, had always had a passion for law; when she started law-school part time, Freier managed to maintain her religious convictions and close-knit family values. "I prayed a lot," she told News 12, "And [I] made a deal with God that, if I could get through law school without compromising my religious values and people that need help with the law, I will help." Now seated on the New York Supreme Court, Freier hopes to show women, mothers, and religious folk alike that they can, indeed, do it all.

2. A school crossing guard in Brooklyn has been charged with assaulting a child. On Monday night around 11 p.m., NYPD arrested Ashaki Abraham, 30, and charged her with assault and "acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 years old." The arrest was made within the 79th Precinct, which covers Bed-Stuy and parts of northern Brooklyn. Police did not give any further details, and it remains unclear if the alleged assault took place while Abraham was working at school or was off duty.

3. One person has died from their injuries after a rampant driver mowed down several pedestrians in a U-Haul attack Monday morning. At present, seven people are injured and one victim, a 44 year old, has died. One of the eight who were seriously hit was a police officer who attempted to stop the driver. The driver, identified as 62-year-old Weng Sor, was arrested after taking police on a brief chase; according to latest reports, Sor was yelling that he wanted to die as he attempted to escape law enforcement. The 40-minute ordeal ended in Red Hood, where police apprehended Sor and took him into custody. During the rampage, a car service driver named Mohamed Abdelmagid was walking to his office when he managed to look up from his phone in time to jump out of the the oncoming U-Haul truck. Surveillance shows Abdelmagid make a desperate leap onto the concrete sidewalk — a move that sent him to the hospital with cracked ribs and a fractured ankle, but most likely saved his life.
