Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. Inside the mind of a Brooklyn rat: Prospect Heights psychotherapists are analyzing their local pests. A self-proclaimed "community busybody," 50-year-old Jesse Hendrich is a psychotherapist living in Prospect Heights. Hendrich and fellow psychotherapist Kamy Wicoff are the founders of SCRAM, a.k.a. the Sterling Committee on Rat Awareness and Mitigation. See what they did there? The thoughtful duo co-founded SCRAM in an effort to unite their local community, one that was being drawn apart by tension and blame on account of the vermin. On their routine "rat walks" committee members go around collected rat data, crunching trash bin numbers, and communicating with NYC Sanitation to help their area fight one of the city's most ubiquitous, shared nuisances.

2. Brooklyn climate activists demand action on NYC's climate plan in the wake of Hurricane Ian and as we approach the 10-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. On Thursday, activists rallied outside of City Hall ahead of a New York City Council Committee on Environmental Protection, urging councilmembers to proceed with implements a resolution that would speak to the goals played out in the city's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). The CLCPA reinforces New York's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent through 2030 and achieve 80 percent by 2050.

3. Driver charged with murder for high-speed hit-and-run that killed grandmother and critically injured 8-year-old grandson in Brooklyn. A suspect was arrested and charged for a fatal hit-and-run this June, police said yesterday. The suspect, of Bed-Stuy, was apprehended early Thursday and charged with murder, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault and reckless endangerment, cops said. Prosecutors are citing surveillance footage of the suspect running back to his home on Marcus Garvey Boulevard, about a mile away from the crash.
