🌼 Solar CEO Makes History + New Homes for Sale + Motorbike Tragedy

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Welcome back, Brooklyn! Carlie here with the Daily to start off your week.

One of Brooklyn's own, a community organizer and CEO is taking the skills she learned from her mother's urban garden in Bushwick to her groundbreaking efforts in affordable, clean energy. Kristal Hansley became a "child of the community" thanks to her mother Avellar and her vegetable farm—the largest in Brooklyn. Also embracing the strength of the sun, Hansley founded WeSolar on Juneteenth in 2020, becoming the first Black woman to launch a community solar company. Ninety-five percent of solar executives are white men, making business legislation in the clean energy sector widely overdue for a re-up on representation. Now, Hansley and WeSolar are partnering with local utility providers to make solar more attainable in communities; she promises electric bill savings between ten and fifty percent to middle to low-income residents. Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. Five new houses have been listed for sale in the Brooklyn Area, including a home with 2 beds and 3 baths for $650,000, and another in the Midwood area with 6 beds and 2 baths for $1.4 million. Whether you're actively looking or just curious to see what's out there, check out more photos and find more info at the link. (Brooklyn Patch)

2. And in more housing news, an affordable housing lottery launches in Linden Terrace. The eighty-story mixed-use building at 573 Emerald St. was designed by Magnusson Architecture and yields 160 residences. 129 of the units are available on NYC Housing Connect, at thirty to seventy percent of the area median income (AMI), ranging from $16-116k. Units are also available for rent. Amenities for the property include an onsite manager, outdoor landscaped terrace, covered parking, bicycle storage, shared laundry room, and a children's play area. Learn more at the link. (New York YIMBY)

3. On Saturday evening, an 18-year-old motorcyclist's leg was severed in a crash. The young motorist was driving the wrong way down Avenue C. in Brooklyn, a one-way street, when he crashed into an SUV traveling north on McDonald. As the teen was carried away from the scene on a stretcher, the elderly woman driving the SUV checked her vehicle for damage. Two others were injured in the incident and are currently being treated at Bellevue Hospital. (New York Post)

4. This weekend, more than fifty bagel creators put their best dough forward in hopes that their delightful disk might win an ultimate title: The Best Bagel. Experts in the field joined avid bagel-lovers at the annual gathering to taste and judge"New York's favorite carbohydrate," from sourdough to rainbow-colored varieties. Attendees cast their vote in a people's choice election, a tradition started by BagelFest creator Sam Silverman just three years ago. Hoping to continue their streak is PopUp Bagels, but contenders like Ess-a-Bagel, Utopia Bagels, and Bagel Boss, as well as local vendors like the Lower East Side's Kossar's Bagels and Bialys, are on a mission for the crown.
