Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. A 13 year old has been charged with murder in a stabbing incident — apparently over a girl — in Coney Island. Nyheem Wright, 17, is believed to have been stabbed on Jan. 20 after standing up for a girl. After a word exchange, Wright was chased down by a group of teenage boys who eventually caught up to him and stabbed him in the torso. He died the next day. The three teenagers who chanted him turned themselves in to the 60th Precinct Sunday afternoon; after questioning, the 13 year old was charged with Wright's murder. The others, 14 and 15, have multiple previous felony arrests, including involving guns — they were charged with assault and gang assault.
2. Asylum seekers are refusing to leave a Midtown hotel to relocate to a different facility inside the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. Earlier this month, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the Brooklyn Terminal would become a temporary shelter for adult male migrants. This weekend, the city began shuttling men from the Watson Hotel (another shelter announced this month) to the new Brooklyn facility. However, many resisted, citing poor living conditions and dangerous exposure to the elements — one protestor supporting the migrants called the Terminal shelter an "icebox" with too few bathrooms. New York City Hall spokesperson Fabien Levy, however, made a statement ensuring that the Cruise Terminal shelter would provide the "same services as every other humanitarian relief center in the city." On Sunday night, the Watson Hotel locked adult male migrants out of the premises in order to force their relocation.
3. In the 2019-2020 school year, there were more than 10,000 reported cases of bullying and discrimination incidents in NYC public schools — a Brooklyn councilmember has just proposed a bill to combat those numbers. Last week, the city's education committee held a hearing to discuss Councilmember Rita Joseph's (D-Brooklyn) proposed anti-bullying bill. The legislation would create an anti-bullying task force made up of public officials, DOE employees, and "experts in conflict resolution, bullying prevention, mental health, school safety and education." A handful of students made statements at the hearing, including a junior at Staten Island Technical High School who said that a lot of the bullying and discrimination she's encountered is subtle, disguised as jokes. Another stunted advocate said that there aren't enough support outlets for kids facing bullying and other micro-aggressions at school — she believes that an official task force would help to set an anti-bullying president among the city's public schools.
4. New Minority House leader and Brooklyn native Hakeem Jeffries delivered his inaugural address at Fort Greene's Brooklyn Technical High School on Sunday. The address was Jeffries' 10th as a member of Congress and his first as Democratic leader, stepping up to replace Nancy Pelosi as the first Black party leader in history. The lifelong Brooklynite promised his audience at Brooklyn Technical that he would fight for causes directly affecting residents of the borough. "No matter what responsibilities I will now have down in Washington, D.C., I want you to understand I will never walk away from you, and I will always have your back," he said. In the future, should the Democrats take majority and regain control of Congress, Jeffries would be the favorite to lead as Speaker of the House.
