📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Brooklyn Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. A 17-year-old girl was shot and killed outside of her apartment building yesterday in Crown Heights. A group of young girls were gathered on their stoop around 6:30 p.m. when two men approached them on scooters and started shooting. The 17 year old was struck in the face, caught by her cousin who held her until ambulances arrived to bring the victim to Brookdale Hospital. Unfortunately, she was unable to be saved. Police are still looking for the shooters.
2. A decade after Sandy, a $52 billion climate vulnerability plan aims to bring safety to Brooklyn shores. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced on Monday that sea walls, storm surge barriers, and moveable sea gates may be coming to flood-prone parts of Brooklyn and Queens. In partnership with local agencies including the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and the Mayor's Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, the Army Corps plans to erect permanent storm surge barriers along vulnerable stretches of Brooklyn's coast; some places, like Red Hood and Coney Island, are still recovering from Sandy 10 years later.
3. New York Live highlights hidden bookstore in Greenpoint with a special backstory. The first, Hey Kids! Comics was started by a father and son during the pandemic; keeping in the tradition of NYC sidewalk bookselling, this duo brought paperback joy during tough times and decided to expand the business. Jason Mojica and his son also expanded their bookselling efforts, opening up a second, hidden location inside a run-of-the-mill bodega on Manhattan Avenue. But instead of comic books, this secret spot has shelves filled with sci-fi, pulp fiction, and other paperback classics.
4. Two men have been charged for a mid-sermon robbery of Bishop Lamor M. Whitehead. In July, the Brooklyn bishop was giving a livestream sermon when two gunmen invaded the space and stole his chains, rings, watches, and jewelry right off his person. In front of a stunned crowd, the perpetrators escaped in broad daylight. Juwan Anderson and Say-Quan Pollack, both 23, were arrested by a joint task force of the New York Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and charged in federal court with one count of using force or fear to commit a robbery and one count of conspiracy to do that. Both men pleaded not guilty in federal court in Brooklyn yesterday.
