(Patch Media)

Hey, hello! It's me, Carlie Houser, your host of the Daily. Here are all the most important things to know about what's happening locally. Today we'll cover these stories and more:

  • Fake military uniforms
  • A new tradition
  • Saturday to-dos

But first, today's weather:

☀️ Sunshine; breezy in the p.m. High: 70 Low: 53.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Brooklyn Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. Brooklyn man is sentenced for counterfeit military uniform scam that endangered U.S. troops. Ramin Kohanbash, 52, was one of three involved in a $20 million scheme that supplied official U.S. military apparel, including labels, to Chinese manufacturers. The fraudulent uniforms were shipped back to Kohanbash who sold them to the U.S. government, claiming they were American made. U.S. law requires that uniforms and gear sold to the Defense Department be produced in the United States or certain other designated countries (China is not among them). Kohanbash has been sentenced to more than three years in prison, federal prosecutors said.

2. Williamsburg Therapy Group is re-opening its doors to those struggling with substance use disorders. Effective Nov. 1, patients will once again be able to access Brooklyn's first high-end outpatient rehab program and get care from doctoral-level psychologists and psychiatrists. CEO of Williamsburg Therapy Group Dr. Daniel Selling said that the country has seen a high relapse rate, due in part to the stress and isolation exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Selling is thrilled to be relaunching the Substance Use Disorder Program, hoping to bring high-end clinical expertise to those seeking rehabilitation and relief.

3. Prospect Park has become home to a new klezmer music tradition. During the summer of 2020, 39-year-old Ilya Shneyveys, a klezmer musician who leads the band Forshpil, wanted to cultivate an outdoor community performance space for folks to gather, play music, and listen during the pandemic. Now known as the Brooklyn Klezmer Picnic, the informal, regular gathering is organized via a Facebook group of the same name; there have been 23 gatherings since the inaugural get-together, occurring on average at least once a month. "At its best, it's a five-hour long jam session," said Aaron Bendich, who runs the klezmer and Jewish music-focused record label "Borscht Beat."

4. Brooklyn MTA bus kills elderly woman near Brooklyn College on Thursday night, police said. Loraine Hector, 79, was struck by a left-turning MTA bus at about 6:15 p.m. She was found lying in the Glenwood Road and Flatbush Avenue crosswalk only about 500 feet from her home. The bus driver, a 46-year-old man, remained at the crime scene until officials arrived. As of Friday morning he has not yet been charged. If on duty, this would most likely be a bus traveling on the B6 or B11 route, according to MTA bus routes.
