🌱 NY Labor Exploitation + Brooklyn Rapper Roasted + Luring Big Tech
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

Good morning, everybody! It's me, Carlie Houser, your host of the Brooklyn Daily — here to tell you everything that's fit to print about what's happening in town these days. Today you'll learn about:
- A Brooklyn non-profit stepping up to help undocumented workers
- The family of Eudes Pierre demanding justice following his death
- Landlords are trying to lure big-tech companies back to their offices
- Brooklyn taking an "L" (that is, a loss) on two performances
But first, today's weather:
☀️ Plenty of sunshine. High: 64 Low: 48.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Brooklyn Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. New York City has a labor exploitation problem against undocumented women, the majority of whom are Latina. According to a recent interview with a handful of Brooklyn workers, many women refrain from filing formal complaints due to fear of reprisal. Labor Justice Project, a nonprofit organization known as Liberty Cleaners, is doing its best to improve the working conditions of these women—many of whom are only paid $8-12 an hour, despite the city's minimum wage being $15. Liberty Cleaners is giving workers training on how to demand proper pay and better working conditions, as well as providing them with outlets that can step it when employers push back on matters of basic labor rights in New York State; rights that are not dependent on immigration status.

2. The family of a 26-year-old who was shot and killed by police during an apparent mental health crisis is filing wrongful death claims. Last year, the young Eudes Pierre was shot and killed at an intersection in Crown Heights and the parkway was just recently co-named in his honor. Just two days after the new sign was unveiled, Pierre's mother filed charges against a handful of NYPD officers for wrongful death, assault, battery with a deadly weapon, negligence, and negligent hiring and retention by the NYPD, as well as violations of her son's civil rights. The night of Pierre's death, cops responded to reports of a man with a knife. The victim was not in possession of a firearm and had left a suicide note at home for his family, whose lawyers argue this is "not the first time" that ill-equipped NYPD officers have killed someone experiencing a mental health crisis.
3. A Brooklyn landlord is trying to lure big-tech to the borough. New York City real-estate developer Rubenstein Partners is offering large firms a 50% rent discount, hoping that slashing prices for prime office-space locations will convince large tech companies to bring their employees back to work in person. Rubenstein's newest building at 25 Kent Ave. in Williamsburg already has Amazon Music and cult streetwear bran Kith signed on the lease. To fill the remainder of the space, Rubenstein has offered to bring down rent from $60-70 per square foot to $30; however, as part of the agreement, rent for office space will increase as employee attendance increases. Target tenants are those like Google, Amazon, Facebook and others who currently have over 500,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan—Rubenstein hopes to bring them across the East River.
4. The Nets lost last night, but they didn't take home the biggest L of the evening. American rapper Fivio Foreign had an arguably tougher night on Wednesday, where he performed for the halftime show at the Pelicans vs. Nets game. The hometown rapper took the court at Brooklyn Barclays Center, performing hits like "Big Drip," "Say My Name," and "City of Gods." Unfortunately, he couldn't seem to keep a beat on anything and fans were quick to roast him on social media. "Fivio Foreign is doing the halftime show for the #Nets and it's like he's trying to perform the songs after just hearing them for the first time five minutes before," one person joked. Others held nothing back, calling Foreign's performance the "worst in history."
