$128M Multi-Service Center Opens In Brownsville

BROOKLYN, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani and city officials unveiled the new $128 million Brownsville Multi-Service Center, a four-story, 60,000-square-foot facility designed to provide space for community-based organizations serving Brooklyn residents.

The center includes 10 office spaces, flexible conference rooms, a commercial kitchen, a 1,600-square-foot outdoor community garden, green roofs and public artwork.

“City government should deliver beautiful, sustainable public buildings that serve working people and the communities they call home,” Mamdani said. “And we delivered this one two years ahead of schedule and $10 million under budget. Brownsville deserves investment that is built with care, and that’s exactly what this center represents.”

The all-electric facility features solar panels across three floors and large windows for natural light, with the project expected to meet or exceed LEED Gold certification.

The Neighborhood Association for Inter-Cultural Affairs will operate the center, which will also house organizations serving Brownsville, including Brooklyn Community Board 16.

The Department of Design and Construction managed the project for the Department of Social Services using design-build construction.

According to the city, the approach reduced construction time by at least two years and saved $10 million. About 11,000 tons of material were removed during demolition, with 85% diverted to recycling facilities.

The center also features “I Am Protected,” a four-part public art installation by Brooklyn artist Jazmine Hayes, commissioned through the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent for Art program.
