Police Question Off-Duty Cop's Claim That He Shot A Robber
Police are investigating the story of an off-duty officer who claimed the man he shot in the face had tried to rob him.
EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN β The off-duty NYPD sergeant who shot a man in the face Thursday was placed on modified duty as officials investigate whether he knew the man he said tried to rob him.
Police originally reported a man tried to rob the sergeant near the corner of Livonia and New Jersey avenues at about 4:55 a.m., but Chief of Department Terence Monahan told reporters Thursday afternoon that the two men might have known each other.
βWe think there may have been some sort of dispute prior to this incident,β Monahan said. βWeβre looking at the now.β

East New York community activist Chris Banks told the New York Post that the two men had an ongoing dispute over a woman.
βThis cop used his weapon in a manner that no officer should ever use his weapon,β said Blake. βIf you look at the story, it doesnβt match.β

The sergeant has been taken off patrol, and placed on administrative duty, as investigators from the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorneyβs office examine surveillance video and interview witnesses, Monahan said.
The injured man, who is in his 20s, was taken to Brookdale Hospital and is in stable condition, said Monahan and police.
