Thief Stabs Worker Over 2 Bars Of Soap In Brooklyn Deli: NYPD

A sholifter stabbed an East New York deli worker who tried to stop him from stealing two bars of soap, police said.

EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN — An East New York store worker was viciously attacked by a shoplifter determined to walk away with two bars of soap, police said.

An employee at the 99 Cent Lots at 758 New Lots Ave. was stabbed with a screwdriver at about 10 p.m. on June 28 by a man who tried to steal soap, police said.

The 51-year-old worker and two colleagues stopped the suspect — whom police describe as a man in his 30s wearing a red baseball cap — after he tried to leave the store without paying for the bars, said police.

Instead of handing over the soap, the man pulled out the screwdriver, stabbed the worker in the arm and ran down New Lots Avenue, said police.

Emergency responders rushed the 51-year-old to Brookdale Hospital where he was treated and released, police said.
