With prices rising, organizers say demand has grown as they hand out more than 300 filled backpacks, plus offer music, food, haircuts, and a safe space for neighbors to come together before school starts. 
• SUNY Reconnect expands in second year, adding programs and new nursing eligibility (wkbw.com) — Buffalo-area adults considering a career change can still enroll in SUNY Reconnect, which now offers free tuition, fees, books, and supplies for more high‑demand programs, including expanded nursing options. Western New Yorkers can apply through SUNY Erie, SUNY Niagara, Genesee, Jamestown, and Alfred State, with added academic support and childcare aimed at helping older students succeed.
• Portland schools employee detained by ICE (pressherald.com) — A Portland, Maine school transportation worker originally from Angola is being held at ICE's Batavia facility near Buffalo after allegedly entering the U.S. without authorization. Maine unions and community members are rallying for his release, highlighting family separation and fear among immigrants while fundraising for legal support and bail.
