Judge Releases Man Who Allegedly Grabbed At Bushwick Police Officer's Gun: Reports

Kurdel Emmanuel was charged with assaulting an 83rd precinct officer then released without bail, the Daily News and New York Post report.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — A man who allegedly marched into a Bushwick police precinct and injured an officer while trying to steal her gun was arrested, charged, then released on his own recognizance, according to reports.

Kurdel Emmanuel, 29, went after an officer’s gun in the 83rd Precinct waiting room on Knickerbocker Avenue and Bleecker Street around 11:15 Saturday afternoon, the Daily News reported.

Police quickly nabbed Emmanuel, who reportedly suffers from severe mental health issues, when he lunged at an officer’s belt, grabbed her arm and tried to pull her weapon out of its holster, according to the Daily News.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for bruising and swelling on her arm, the Daily News reported.

Emmanuel was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Sunday where — despite prosecutors' plea that he be held on $250,000 bond — Judge Loren Baily-Schiffman released him without bail, according to the Daily News.

Emanuel returned to his East Flatbush home Sunday night, his stepmother told the New York Post.

Law enforcement representatives expressed outrage that a man charged with assaulting an officer should be released the same week a Bronx police officer was killed by a mentally unstable man.

“This is a sickening display of carelessness or callousness by a judge who should be fully aware of similarity in the circumstances,” Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association said in a statement obtained by the Daily News.

“[Emmanuel] could go out there and kill someone tonight,” added Dennis Quirk, president of the New York State Court Officers Association.

Baily-Schiffman did not respond to requests to comment from either the Daily News or the New York Post.
