• With Peconic Estuary at risk, Navy timeline too slow: Schumer (riverheadlocal.com) — PFAS-contaminated groundwater from the former Navy/Grumman site in Calverton is still moving toward the Peconic River system, and Sen. Schumer says the Navy's projected 2039 cleanup timeline is unacceptable. A new treatment system has started operating but key performance data remain undisclosed, leaving Calverton and Riverhead residents worried about drinking water and the estuary's long-term health.
• Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue is back in full production almost two years after bird flu outbreak (northforker.com) — Crescent Duck Farm in nearby Aquebogue is back to full production after a devastating 2025 bird flu outbreak, thanks in part to strong community support. Calverton's Miloski's Poultry Farm raised Crescent's last saved ducklings and now sells fresh Crescent duck several days a week, helping restore jobs and preserve Long Island's last commercial duck operation.
• No public turnout at Riverhead IDA hearing on $35M Town Square hotel tax breaks (riverheadlocal.com) — Riverhead's IDA held a public hearing on major tax breaks for a proposed $35 million Town Square hotel, but no residents showed up, so written comments are being accepted through the Oct. 5 meeting. The agency also heard an expansion request for a Scott Avenue business in Calverton, while ongoing problems with the IDA's outdated website raise concerns about public notice and transparency.
