📰 News we're reading

• Carmel House Fire Caused By Malfunctioning Lithium-Ion Battery (wpdh.com) — A recent garage fire in a Carmel home, traced to a malfunctioning lithium‑ion battery, has prompted urgent safety warnings from local fire and police officials. Crews contained the blaze, but the home suffered significant smoke and heat damage, and the monitored alarm system failed to activate. Authorities are urging Carmel residents to test alarms regularly and follow strict lithium‑ion charging and storage precautions.

• Reassessments … Not Fun, But Necessary (putnampresstimes.com) — Kent homeowners, especially those in Lake Carmel and the Carmel school district, are seeing higher property assessments but not automatic tax hikes, according to the town assessor. He explains that as long as values rise in line with the townwide average, the lower tax rate offsets the higher assessments, with only previously underassessed properties likely to see real tax increases.
