Boaters Rescued After Crash

A man and woman jumped from their boat just before it was struck by another vessel, police say.

MORICHES, NY — A man and woman from Moriches were rescued from the water following a boat crash, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place Saturday at 7:15 p.m. in Moriches Inlet; Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers rescued boaters from the water after two boats collided.

Officers John Falcone and George Schmidt were onboard Marine Mike when they heard a Coast Guard call about a boat in unknown distress near their location; they responded to Moriches Inlet at 7:15 p.m. and found a man and a woman in the water after they'd jumped from their 16-foot center console HSX boat just before a 34-foot Cabo boat struck it, police said.

Officers Falcone and Schmidt pulled the operator of the HSX, Ted Felice, and his passenger, Joan Grauer, to safety; Felice, 59, and Grauer, 55, both of Mastic, were transported by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The operator of the Cabo told officers he did not see the smaller boat due to sun glare; he and his three passengers were not injured, police said.

Both boats were towed to shore.
