Phase Out NYC Horse Drawn Carriages

I had thought that the horse drawn carriages were limited to Central Park, but carriage horses are still transported down 7th Avenue, Fifth Avenue and on Central Park South and Fifth Avenue, all in heavy traffic. The horses are subject to being injured by cars and buses and often develop serious respiratory diseases from the inhalation of exhaust from buses and taxis.

Many cities, for example Chicago and even Guadalajara, Mexico, have replaced horse-drawn carriages with electric vehicles and have instituted bans on horse carriage rides. According to Edita Birnkrant, the executive director of NYCLASS, it is "long overdue that New York joins other global cities in shifting to abuse-free, electric-powered carriages that provide drivers with better paying, safer jobs".
