The tourist who inadvertently stepped on a homemade fireworks device in Central Park had his leg amputated, his grandmother told reporters.

CENTRAL PARK, NY — The man injured in Sunday's explosion in Central Park had his leg amputated below the knee, according to reports.
Connor Golden, 18, a University of Miami student from Fairfax, Va. was taken to Bellevue Hospital in "serious but stable condition," Sunday when he stepped on what has been described as a rudimentary explosive device, police said.
On Monday Golden's grandmother told NBC News4 in Washington that his leg was amputated below the knee.

"I would guess that he would love to continue at the University of Miami and sports," Roberta Golden told News4. "I have no idea how he would go about it and ironically his birthday is next Sunday and he wanted a long skateboard. Everybody in Miami has them."

Officials on Monday said that the explosion Sunday in Central Park that sent Golden to the hospital was likely caused by an "explosive experiment" that is not related to any sort of terrorist activities. Officials initially responded around 10:53 a.m. at Fifth Avenue and E. 68th St for a major injury with a "possible amputation," the FDNY said.

In a Monday press conference, Lt. Mark Torre, commanding officer of the New York Police Department's bomb squad, said the device was likely not created to harm people but was a rudimentary explosive created by someone who had a basic understanding of chemistry.
Forensic evidence from the blast has been sent to a police lab. Investigators hope to have the results back by Wednesday.
It is still not known who made the explosive or why it was left in the park.
