Chappaqua DAR Chapter Promotes National Family Literacy Day

Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR celebrates National Family Literacy Day with a board book drive to benefit the Open Book Program.

From Polly Cooper NSDAR: In honor of National Family Literacy Day, the Polly Cooper Chapter DAR ran a board book drive to benefit the Open Book Program - one of the volunteer programs coordinated through JCY Westchester Community Partners. Open Book nurtures reading and literacy among families and children at the Westchester Medical Center outpatient clinic and Maria Ferari Children's Hospital NICU unit. Volunteers read to the children, speak to the parents about the importance of literacy in their homes, and give the children new book to take home, they. Janis Schrader, the Director of Open Book said, “On behalf of all the volunteers at OPEN BOOK/JCY-WCP, I'd like to thank the Polly Cooper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for the donation of children’s books. This donation will help us to reach out to more children and families of Westchester County.”

In addition to supporting the Open Book Program, the Polly Cooper Chapter also created care packages with books and magazines for active military members who are stationed away from home for the holidays.

The independent bookstore Scattered Books in Chappaqua assisted the chapter by donating and collecting books for each endeavor. Other donations came from Polly Cooper Chapter members, other DAR members, and individuals in the community. The Daughters of the American Revolution are engaged in promoting literacy for all ages and believe education is one of the cornerstones of the society. Across the country, Daughters are helping those with significant literacy needs to help them to learn to read, to gain self respect and confidence, and to achieve life goals that might otherwise be out of reach.
