Every day, the evidence grows stronger that successful weight loss begins with an individualized approach that takes into account the many complex factors of an individual’s unique physical makeup. Now, a new Tufts University study confirms that fasting glucose levels, or blood sugar levels, can affect weight loss.
In fact, Sai Krupa Das, Ph.D., one of the study authors, said in a release, "Study participants with higher blood sugar levels lost more weight on a high-fiber, low-glycemic diet than those on the same diet with lower blood sugar levels, suggesting that it might be possible to optimize weight loss approaches based on a simple clinical measure.”
It’s the kind of measure that we already take for every client here at NY Health & Wellness, with our Health 365 Panel -- a comprehensive blood test that includes a metabolic panel with lipid to measure glucose levels, electrolytes and more.
But we don’t stop there. The Health 365 Panel also includes a thorough assessment of 11 key hormones that relate to appetite and metabolism. Testing and monitoring these various blood levels provides critical information about the individual that helps us customize a weight loss plan that will help them achieve -- and maintain -- weight loss success.

For instance, depending on what the testing shows, we may recommend dietary changes or healthful supplementation to help a client through periods of hormonal change, such as menopause.
“It might be time to consider glycemic status when advising patients on the best strategy for weight loss,” said study author Susan B. Roberts, Ph.D., in the Tufts release. Roberts is director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.
