Football Preview: Foxes Start With New Coach

Fox Lane team will include new coach Steve Quinn and several rising seniors.

After 12 years, Bill Broggy is no longer coaching Fox Lane as Steve Quinn is the new boss on the Foxes sideline. The adjustment though for the players isn’t as big as one might think.

“My seventh grade year he (Quinn) was the assistant on the modified team that I was on and in eighth grade he was the head coach so now it’s just the same thing except we are four years older now,” Fox Lane senior quarterback/cornerback TJ Hallock said.

Hallock, whose team comes off a 5-4 campaign, said Fox Lane’s first day of practice on Friday went fine.

“We felt good, everything was clicking, we were running on all cylinders,” Hallock said. “Everybody was responsive to coach Quinn, we liked what he was doing.”

“They weren’t any pointless reps,” Hallock continued. “We did what we had to do and moved on to the next thing. It was an efficient first day of practice.”

Quinn is planning on having plenty of efficient days with Hallock under center.

“He is really versatile, has a lot of leadership skills and is very competitive,” Quinn said.

Quinn’s main guy running the ball will be senior running back/free safety Spencer Chernus, who can play a number of different positions if need be according to Quinn.

“He is a very intelligent player who picks things up very quickly and is very productive,” Quinn said.

Senior third-year starter Bryant Hill gives the Foxes someone who is an athletic offensive lineman and defensive tackle.

Senior wide receiver/weak-side linebacker Kevin Muller is someone that Hallock will be looking to when he needs a big play in the air.

Providing plenty of solid play on defense will be brothers, senior hard-nosed linebacker Anthony Grasso and senior strong safety Nick Grasso. Both are entering their third year as starters.

“Nicky is very well rounded,” Quinn said. “He originally was a lineman but he then moved to strong safety so he plays both the run and pass very well.”

Fox Lane opens the season at defending five-time Section 1 Class AA champ New Rochelle at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10.

“We are looking for improvement with every single week," Quinn said. "We have a very difficult schedule but we are looking to come out on top more often than not."
