Fox Lane and Harrison Tie, 0-0, In Girls Soccer

The Harrison Huskies and the Fox Lane Foxes battled into overtime Tuesday afternoon in a defensive struggle that ended in a 0-0 tie.

The weather held off long enough for a full game, but it still wouldn't be enough to decide a winner as Tuesday afternoon's girls soccer game between Harrison and Fox Lane ended in a scoreless tie.

Harrison came into the contest looking for their first league win with a record of 6-3-1, while the Fox Lane Foxes have already established themselves as one of the best teams in the area.

Each team had their chances to score, but neither looked to be at their best as both the Foxes and the Huskies missed their share of good looks at the goal.

"Both teams were off on shooting today," said Harrison Head Coach Jon-Erik Zappala. "Toward the end of the game each team had opportunities, but in the heat of the moment you just blast the ball rather then trying to just keep it simple and place the ball in the corner."

The teams got great efforts from their defenses, Harrison's defense especially played one of their best games of the season to keep a dangerous Fox Lane team off the scoreboard. Harrison goalie Jackie Fonseca was on-point for the entire afternoon, earning the shutout.

Harrison also got superb efforts from seniors Andrea Moschetta and Nicole Tenner, both girls led the defensive charge for the Huskies and made sure that every shot for the Foxes was heavily contested.

"I think our defensive unit is one of the best I have ever played with," said Fonseca. "Together they have a really good chemistry and each individual is a great player so when you put them all together they are a very solid defense."

Offensively Harrison relied heavily on the speed and poise of two juniors, Izzy Scheck and Nina Sarmiento who were both key in keeping the pressure on the Fox Lane goaltender and defense. Had it not been for their attack Harrison would have had trouble battling to the tie.

Fox Lane players Michelle Kowalski and Serena Malsin did their best to keep the pressure on the Harrison defense, not giving up throughout regulation and overtime.

"Did we play as well as we could have? Probably not," said Fox Lane Head Coach Fabian Videla. "But the credit goes to Harrison, the reason we didn't play well is because they played well."

"I am happy with the tie because the girls played really hard," said Zappala. "If we had lost I would not have been a happy camper, because we were dominating that game."

Fox Lane's next game will be at Rye High School on Thursday, while Harrison will face Horace Greeley at home on Thursday.
