Fox Lane Boys Basketball Wins Tournament Over Woodlands

Foxes defeat Woodlands in championship game.

The Fox Lane boys basketball team could not have drawn up a better start to a season.

In the championship game of the Maroon and White Kari Pizzitola Holiday Basketball Tournament at Scarsdale, the Fox Lane Boys Basketball team was able to win its second straight game against a tough opponent and beat the Woodlands Falcons 54-43.

In the early going, both teams were looking to get their games on track and it took the entire 1st quarter before either team found any kind of rhythm on the offensive side.

Woodlands had the lead 11-6 but as the 2nd quarter got underway the Foxes' defense helped give them a spark that got the offense going as well.

Fox Lane's defense did not allow a Woodlands field goal until the 2:30 mark of the 2nd quarter and went on a 13-2 run that gave them a 17-13 lead.

It was then that Woodlands got its game back for a moment and scored six straight points and took the lead back 19-17.

The half though ended with the Foxes once again getting on a roll and outscoring Woodlands 8-2 the rest of the 2nd Quarter and Fox Lane took a 25-21 lead into halftime.

For Fox Lane Head Coach Chris Violante, he was happy that his team bounced back after a tough first quarter.

"I just think it was execution, we were nervous and we play a team that's athletic. It makes you play a game at a faster pace then you're accustomed too," he said. "The kids, they settled down and they just played."

The 2nd half was more of a complete performance from Fox Lane as the Foxes pulled away in the third quarter and never were in danger in the fourth quarter. The passing and lack of turnovers was the key for the Foxes as Woodlands struggled shooting the ball and did not play well in the half court sets that the Foxes excelled in.

At the end, it was the tandem of Matt Swenson and Will Trawick that led this team to a 2-0 start and the tournament win. Both earned spots on the All-Tournament team and Swenson was the MVP, leading the team with 16 points. Trawick finished with 12.

For Violante, he knows that his team is off to a great start, and could lead to a special season for the Foxes.

"The sky's the limit for us, we can just keep getting better, were young, we're deep and if we keep establishing this rotation it can be a real special year," he said.
