Fox Lane Dominates Brewster 17-4 in Girls Lacrosse Quarterfinal

Foxes score first six goals of the game.

Scoring early and often in front of its home crowd, Fox Lane defeated Brewster 17-4 in a girls lacrosse quarterfinal sectional matchup.

Fox Lane controlled a majority of the draws in the game, allowing it to dictate tempo and get into its fast break, which ultimately proved too much to handle for Brewster. The Foxes opened up the game on a 6-0 run, and did not give up a goal until ten minutes into the contest.

"We just came out aggressively from the beginning, something we've struggled a little with this season,"  junior Lindsay Toppe said.

"We didn't come out with the mindset that we had beaten Brewster before. We respected their talent and I think that showed on the field. Having momentum from the beginning helped us a lot," she said.

Brewster did its best to get back into the game, closing the gap to 7-3 with 6:30 to go in the first half, but that was as close as the Bears would get for the rest of the game, as Fox Lane answered with a barrage of shots and goals. Lexi Cannon's goal for Fox Lane with nine seconds left in the first half made the score 11-4, and erased any hope of a Brewster comeback.

"We were doing a great job of working the ball up the field and getting good looks," Fox Lane coach Bill Broggy said. "We're really proud of the girls. The way we pressured the ball all game, we made it hard for them to get shots off."

Fox Lane secured the win with great second half defense, never allowing Brewster to get into any kind of offensive rhyme and shutting out the Bears 6-0 in the second period.

"Coach has been telling us to play hard no matter what the score is," said junior Sophia Ohler, who led Fox Lane with six ground balls. "We were really cohesive on defense today. We just kept playing hard and talked a lot, and our goalie had a great game."

Offensively, Toppe led the Foxes with five goals against Brewster, bringing her season total to 108. Sophomores Sydney Stern and Lexi Cannon combined for seven goals and five assists, while classmate Sammy Jo Tracy scored three times while also contributing in other key areas for her team.

"Sammy was huge in winning the draws," coach Broggy said. "In an offensive game like this, and when you have a player like Lindsay [Toppe] who scores 80 percent of the time she shoots, possession is huge."

With the win, Fox Lane advances to the sectional semi-finals, which will be played Tuesday at a location to be determined.
