Jury Reaches Verdicts On Attempted Rapes, Burglaries

The two crimes were linked by authorities using DNA.

MOUNT KISCO, NY — A Westchester County jury reached a verdict in the attempted rapes that occurred in a Mount Kisco home and a Metro North train station. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said the jury found Ronal Danilo Sandoval-Campos, 26, guilty on eight counts related to sex crimes against two victims in northern Westchester in 2016.

Sandoval-Campos, who was living in Purdys but was in the U.S. illegally, was found guilty of the following charges:

  • Second-degree burglary, a felony
  • Second-degree burglary as a sexually motivated offense, a felony
  • Two counts of first-degree attempted rape, felonies
  • Two counts of third-degree attempted rape, felonies
  • Two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, felonies

Scarpino said that, around midnight June 3, 2016, a Mount Kisco woman, 42, was at home asleep in bed when Sandoval-Campos broke into her home, climbed on top of her and sexually attacked her.

During the struggle with him, she took a gray baseball hat off his head as he fled.

The second victim — a 19-year-old woman — arrived at the Purdys Metro North train station around 8 a.m. Aug. 21, 2016, after commuting from New York City.

As she walked through the stairwell and platform heading to the parking lot, she was approached by Sandoval-Campos, who tried to engage her in conversation.

The woman continued walking toward a footpath leading to Route 116, ignoring him.

When she got to the footpath, Sandoval-Campos grabbed her, got her on the ground and began groping her, attempting to remove her clothing as he exposed himself.

Police said a good Samaritan in the parking lot responded to the woman’s screams and prevented her from being raped.

Sandoval-Campos ran from the scene, dropping an orange baseball cap he was wearing during the attack.

Authorities said DNA results conducted from each baseball cap recovered from the crime scenes were entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), and the cases were linked to each other conclusively establishing Sandoval-Campos as the perpetrator of both crimes.

He was arrested Sept. 9, 2016.

Sandoval-Campos remains in custody and is scheduled for sentencing Sept.18.

He faces up to 30 years in state prison and will have to register as a sex offender when he’s released from prison.
