Most people never will understand why we do what we do. How many of your friends or even you family have given you that weird look when you start talking about your MMA training? How many strange glares have you received when people spot the bruises on your face from kickboxing or the ones on your body from jiu-jitsu? I can’t even count how many times my mother or grandmother asked me to stop fearing I’d be hurt. Most people will really never understand our love for martial arts. To tell you the truth I can’t understand why they don’t. I don’t get it when someone chooses a different method for achieving their fitness goals. Let us see if we can change some minds here with this article.
I believe that everything you need to know about who you are you will learn through your training. The challenges we face on a daily basis in training prepare us for the challenges we will face in life. A great example would be something that effects us all, fear. Fear can take control of your life in a way unparalleled to anything else. There are people in this world that won’t go outside of their homes due to fear. There are people that refrain from experiencing some of life’s greatest joys because they are afraid. Maybe its not being able to board a plane. Maybe it’s not being able to speak to the pretty girl you have a crush on. Fear is one of the most natural emotions we have. It is perfectly to be afraid. It is not however ok to allow that fear to control you. To hold you back from reaching your full potential. In our martial arts training we learn to allow the fear to set in. To use it as motivation to push forward. We face our fears until they no longer scare us. Our fears allow us to grow stronger.
Let me ask you something. Do you have a co-worker that tends to get on your nerves? Maybe it’s the way the talk or the way they go about their job. Maybe it’s just them. Martial arts teaches us to accept things that would usually drive us nuts. We look inward to achieve self improvement. We become at peace with ourselves through our which allows us accept others. Even if they are doing something that would normally have us pulling out our hair we can step away, take a deep breath and know that later on that day we get to punch and kick and problems completely out of our system. This positive release of stress enables us to treat everyone better which in turn, makes for better relationships. Put simply, people who train in the martial arts are just nicer than everyone else.

Here is a great one. I have heard over and over again that training martial arts is all about fighting. In an essence that is true but not how you may think. Let me explain. An example is a child that is undisciplined and aggressive. People may think that martial arts is not the answer. They may think its like giving an obese person a cheeseburger. That they will only use their new found knowledge to hurt people. In fact it’s the opposite that will occur. Through their training they learn how precious their new found power is. They learn that in order to achieve at the highest level they must only use this power for good. Some what like a super hero. With great power comes great responsibility. The real fighting a martial artist does is with in themselves. Fighting against laziness. Fighting against peer pressure. Fighting against fear. We fight every single day of our lives in effort to improve ourselves in a positive manner. That is the toughest fight ever.
There are so many benefits to training martial arts, I could go on forever. It worries me that so many people will; never experience this for some preconceived notion that they heard from someone that heard it from someone. I make it my mission to spread the word to all I meet. To let them know that it’s ok to be afraid of trying something new. That is ok if we fail as long as we keep trying until we succeed. I’ve seen the joy in the faces of so many people on my mat that probably never thought the would feel. Watching someone do something they never thought they could and do it well is amazing.

Martial arts just makes life easier. The struggles we face on the mat make us stronger in every way possible. Do me a favor. If you read this and agree make it your mission to reach out to one of these doubters, someone who never dreamed of being a martial artist. Convince them to give it a try. Their success will be yours as well.
