Local DAR Chapter Hosts History of Oneida Nation Presentation
Members of the Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR learn of Oneida Nation's history from Suzanne Bellinger of the Oneida Chapter, NSDAR
Bedford, New York – On Sunday, September 16, 2018 members of the Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR were treated to a presentation on the history of the Oneida Nation by Suzanne Bellinger of the Oneida Chapter, NSDAR. Chapter members learned of the Oneida Indian's critical role in the American Revolution, the depletion of their homeland by the early 1900s, and the dedication rebuilding efforts that led to the Oneida Nation’s resurgence today.
The Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR honors Polly Cooper, a courageous Oneida woman who walked from Central New York to Valley Forge through the winter on a relief mission organized by Chief Shenendoah. She helped cook and feed George Washington’s troops and haul buckets of water to the battlefield.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation’s children. Its members descend from patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With 178,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.
