Local DAR Cleans Old Chappaqua Historic District Waterways

Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR participates in DAR's "Sea to Shining Sea Challenge" and Clears Years of Plastic Debris from Local Waterways

(Chappaqua, NY) Members of the Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR Conservation Committee recently cleaned the Old Chappaqua Historic District waterways, clogged with years of plastic pollution: food containers, garden pots, straws, toys, and lots of plastic bags. During the clean-up, members encountered minnows, frogs, dragonflies, and other creatures inhabiting these small but critical waterways.

Committee members also visited nearby areas, including Gedney Park in Chappaqua and Wampus Pond Park in Armonk, and found these waterways clear of plastic debris. The chapter is working with local conservation groups to organize or participate in clean-up events for the Saw Mill River and Hudson River.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution established the Conservation Committee in 1909 with a focus on protecting and conserving our natural resources which are of vital importance to our country's national security and the health and well-being of future generations. The "Sea to Shining Sea Challenge" encourages DAR Chapters around the world to participate in the clean-up of lakes, rivers, and oceans which are under tremendous threat from plastic pollution.
