New Castle Loses Only Supermarket

The A and P in Millwood didn't get a new lease on life as did its counterparts elsewhere in northern Westchester

An apparent dispute between the landlord of Millwood Plaza and the business that won the bid for the A&P in Millwood leaves New Castle without a supermarket.

According to The Examiner and other news outlets, the landlord wanted extra guarantees before allowing Ruben and James Luna, who own several groceries in the tri-state area, to take over the lease.

So while the Mount Kisco A&P, which was the now-bankrupt company’s flagship store, re-opened last week (as a Stop & Shop), the Millwood store closes at the end of the month.

Although small, with narrow aisles, and increasingly dingy, the Millwood store was a favorite with many in the surrounding communities of Chappaqua, Yorktown, Ossining and Briarcliff Manor, particularly for its meat department.

“This is a temporary setback,” said New Castle Supervisor Rob Greenstein. “ I am confident that we will have a supermarket in that location.”
