New Castle Marks 100th Veterans Day With Special Event

The New Castle Historical Society will hold a Meet Our Veterans event from 2-4 p.m. Monday at the Millwood Firehouse in honor of the 100th anniversary of the very first Armistice Day in 1919. Veterans, local officials, Girl Scouts and community leaders are expected to attend.

The idea for New Castle's celebration grew out of Erica Dunne's Girl Scout Gold Award project. She has been interviewing local veterans and writing up their stories for the New Castle Historical Society.

"Over the course of these interviews, I realized that this was the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day," Dunne told Patch. "It seemed like an ideal time to celebrate our town's veterans in a meaningful way.

"For the past decade or so, Chappaqua Girl Scouts have been delivering cookies to every veteran in town on Veterans Day. I've been doing this myself since I was five and it's one of my favorite Girl Scout memories," she said. "Our veterans are so grateful for this small token every year. This event hopefully will build on our town's recognition of the sacrifices of service members."
