Photos: Bedford Central's 3rd-Annual BikeRun

More than 300 elementary school kids were signed up for the Bedford Central School District's third-annual BikeRun, an event that is meant to bring together kids from the district's elementary schools.

The BikeRun, held Sunday morning, included biking along a course on the Fox Lane campus, near the high school and middle school. Different categories were held based on grade level: K-1, 2-3 and 4-5.

Parent Christina Dochtermann, who co-founded the BikeRun two years ago and serves as its chair, described it as a "wellness day," and noted that it takes the kids' activity of riding bikes and has it in a settling like a professional race.

The theme of the BikeRun is called Future Foxes, Dochtermann said. In Bedford Central, a district that is large in land area, it is a chance for the future classmates of the Fox Lane campus to meet each other early on.

BikeRun included an array of local sponsors, with thousands of dollars raised, according to Dochtermann. They ranged from Mount Kisco's Bicycle World giving away a bike for raffling off, to Frannie's Goodie Shop providing yogurt.

Noting the strong demand for registering kids, Dochtermann said that 378 were accepted for the BikeRun.

Sending out thank you a email after the BikeRun, Dochtermann thanked various folks in the district for helping out, from officials to Fox Lane High School students.

"Thank You just doesn't seem enough. I'm Grateful! Honored! Proud of being a BCSD family! And feel so fortunate to know, be friends and volunteer with each of you!" she said.

"Additional appreciation goes out to our helpful FLHS & FLMS custodial staffs.  The FLHS PepBand for braving the elements with instruments, music stands and all.  The spirit filled FLHS Cheerleaders.  Our National Anthem by WPES Student Victoria Weisse. Our PE Coaches for handing out the finishers metals and supporting BR and Wellness all year long.  Emma Kolsky for being an amazing KIT!  Dr. Hochman (our Superintendent) and Susan Wollin (BOE Pres) and Beth Starpoloi (Athletic Director) for being so incredibly hands on from set up to clean up - you truly lead by example!"
