More than $140,000 has been fraudulently obtained through the scheme targeting homeowners so far, according to investigators.
NEW CASTLE, NY — Over the past month, there have been eight reports of checks stolen from mailboxes around town, according to New Castle police.
The checks were taken from standard and tamper-proof residential mailboxes, according to a Nixle alert from the New Castle Police Department. The stolen checks were then altered and cashed for large sums at different banks. More than $140,000 has been fraudulently obtained through the scheme, according to investigators.
"We are asking the public to report any suspicious activity around any mailboxes," police officials said in the alert dated Jan. 20. "We also recommend using online banking services or hand-delivering your letter directly to the post office."
