Sen. Mayer Presents American Legion Post 1097 With NYS Empire Award
The honor is reserved for nonprofit organizations and small businesses that have positively impacted their communities.

ARMONK, NY — A group that has already given more than their fair share was recently honored for their commitment to their community and each other.
NYS Senator Shelley Mayer presented the NYS Empire Award, given to nonprofit organizations and small businesses that have positively impacted their communities, to American Legion Post 1097 for its dedication to veterans and for its commitment to accessibility.
"I am pleased to honor American Legion Post 1097 with the New York State Empire Award," Sen. Mayer said. "The organization plays a key role in keeping veterans connected and leading the next generation in civic life. I applaud the Post and Westchester County’s efforts to upgrade the building and to ensure it continues to be accessible for disabled and aging veterans for many years to come."

American Legion Post 1097 recently completed construction on a handicap accessible bathroom and added a handicap stairlift to its rear entrance at its facility located at 35 Bedford Road in Armonk. Additional improvements include new exterior doors, light fixtures, windows, paint and carpeting. The work was made possible through a $60,500 grant the Post received from Westchester County.
"We are very honored and thankful to Senator Shelley Mayer for this prestigious award and for her friendship,"American Legion Post 1097 Treasurer Tony Cicia said. "We are also grateful to Senator Mayer and Westchester County Executive George Latimer for the generous grant we received which has enabled us to make much needed improvements and to make Post 1097 accessible to all."

Westchester County Executive George Latimer made a point to be on hand to offer his congratulations to the Chappaqua civic group.
"Recognizing those who have served to protect our freedoms, while giving them space to gather here at home, is of the utmost importance to Westchester County," Latimer said. "We are honored to have assisted in this renovation and we thank Senator Shelley Mayer for this special Empire Award tribute recognizing American Legion Post 1097."
