The Pain of Ankle Sprains

Have you ever fallen on your ankle and wondered if your injury is worse than it is?  Whether or not it has become sprained or just a simple over extension?  Here are some helpful tips from Northern Westchester Hospital's very own Dr. Kurt Voellmicke.

A sprain is defined as a stretched or torn ligament.  A Ligament is a tough, fibrous tissue that connects one bone to another and supports your joints. The most common type of sprain is the ankle sprain.  Typically people roll their ankle outward or inward and damage the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.

The signs of a sprain can be easy to dismiss as something less serious.  While the intensity varies, pain, bruising, swelling, and inflammation are common to all three categories of sprains: mild, moderate, and severe, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
