I was thinking about the concept of balance in my life. It is such an interesting word. Sometimes it implies harmony – “My life is perfectly in balance…” More often, I have an image of myself on a high wire, with no net, while balancing a plate on my nose! While we strive for (hope for? pray for?) perfection, our lives regularly feel like a high wire act.
What can we do to step back from the stress and regain control? Shockingly, I have a couple of suggestions!
- First and foremost, ask for help! I know that you think you can do it all (or that you should be able to). Or, worse, that everyone in your life seems to expect you to. Well, I have news for you. Whether it is co-workers, kids, or a husband/boyfriend, they are all willing to step in and share some of your load, especially if you actually ASK FOR HELP! Give it a try. I bet they will be surprised you asked…
- Second, your life should not be an Olympic high diving event, where you get more points if your dive is extra difficult. Does your life feel like a two and a half back-somersault dive with two and a half twists??? Who made it that way? Step back and prioritize. Again, ask for help. And, make a conscious effort to eliminate the two and a half twists…
- Third, just unplug once in a while. Read a book. Watch a show. Have a glass of wine. Flirt. Just have fun. Your crazy life will still be there waiting for you. But when you get back to it, a little more relaxed, you may find that your task list will be less daunting and things will get done more easily. Unplugging is my best tactic. I hope it works for you.
Let me know which tactic you try and how it goes for you.
