Westchester DAR Chapter Celebrates the U.S. Constitution

(PLEASANTVILLE, NY) The Polly Cooper Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) encourages everyone to reflect on the United States Constitution during Constitution Week this September 17-23.

The annual week-long commemoration of the U.S. Constitution was initiated by the DAR when in 1955, the patriotic service organization petitioned Congress to set aside Constitution Week each year for dedicated observance of this foundational document of national governance. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The aims of Constitution Week are to:

• Encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787
• Remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life
• Emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution

From September 2 – September 24, patrons of the main campus of the Mount Pleasant Public Library at 350 Bedford Road, Pleasantville have been greeted with a colorful display containing facts on the U.S. Constitution in the glass display cases at the parking lot entrance. Within the walls of the library, adult, young adult, and elementary school patrons have been finding U.S. Constitution book displays geared to their interests. Free Constitution-related gifts were provided by Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR.

On September 9, at the Village of Pleasantville monthly Board Meeting, Mayor Peter Scherer issued Polly Cooper, NSDAR Chapter Regent Rosemarie Schmidt an official signed proclamation from the Village of Pleasantville commemorating the national celebration of the U.S. Constitution.

DAR President General Pamela Rouse Wright said: “We are so proud DAR has led the way in making Constitution Week an official commemoration with our members enthusiastically promoting the celebration annually in communities across the country. We encourage all citizens to join us in celebrating this powerful document that is so important to American history and to reflect on the impact the Constitution has had on the lives of American citizens past and present.”

One of the largest service organizations in the world, the DAR (dar.org) has 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters located in the United States and in several foreign countries. DAR members promote historic preservation, education and patriotism via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives, citizenship programs, service to veterans, meaningful community service and more. The Polly Cooper Chapter was established with nineteen organizing members in 2017; Today, the chapter has over sixty active members from throughout Northern Westchester, including many in Pleasantville.
