Chelsea Neighbors United&nbsp;(CNU) will conduct a Know Your Rights and ICE Preparedness training&nbsp;on Sunday, May 3 at 2.00PM.&nbsp;&nbsp;The training will follow a special musical service featuring the Chelsea Community Church (CCC) Choir&nbsp;from 1.00 PM to 1.30PM.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those wishing to participate in the ICE Preparedness Training are invited to attend&nbsp;CCC’s Uplifting Choir Music &amp; Sing-Along from 1.00 - 1.30PM&nbsp;and a getting to know you Coffee &amp; Cake reception in the Church&nbsp;from 1.30PM to 2.00PM.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our goal is to build strong community bonds in Chelsea. Folks in other cities who have been invaded by Federal forces have come to realize that the best defense is local. And the better prepared we are the better we can support our neighbors. Come learn about what CNU is doing and how you can become involved. There are many ways to do that – letter writing, rallying, canvassing local businesses, talking to our domestic workers/caregivers, etc.&nbsp;

Join us for an engaging evening with Dr. Georgette Bennett in conversation with Sir Simon Schama as they discuss Bennett’s new book,&nbsp;Half-Jew, Full Life: The Unlikely Journey of a Voluntary Jew from Nazi Persecution to the American Dream. This special book talk explores themes of identity, memory, resilience, and belonging, brought to life through Bennett’s deeply personal story and Schama’s incisive historical perspective.
Dr. Georgette Bennett is an award-winning sociologist, author, and former broadcast journalist, as well as an innovative philanthropic leader. She is the founder of the Multifaith Alliance, which has mobilized more than $630 million in humanitarian aid, and previously established the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding. A pioneer in community policing earlier in her career, she has also advised the U.S. State Department on countering religion-based violence. Dr. Bennett is the author of several books, including&nbsp;Religicide&nbsp;and&nbsp;Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By, and has received numerous honors, including the AARP Purpose Prize and recognition on&nbsp;Forbes’&nbsp;“50 Over 50 Women of Impact” list.
Sir Simon Schama is University Professor of Art History and History at Columbia University and a Contributing Editor of the&nbsp;Financial Times. He has previously taught at Cambridge, Oxford, and Harvard Universities. An award-winning author of more than twenty books translated into over twenty languages, his works include&nbsp;The Story of the Jews, Volumes I and II. His most recent book,&nbsp;Foreign Bodies: Pandemics, Vaccines and the Health of Nations, was published in 2023. Schama is also the writer-presenter of more than sixty documentaries on art, history, and literature for BBC television; his most recent film,&nbsp;The Road to Auschwitz, aired on PBS in 2025.
Together, Bennett and Schama will explore the intersections of personal history and collective memory, offering a thought-provoking conversation on heritage, identity, and the enduring impact of the past. A Q&amp;A with the audience will follow.

Join us for a compelling book talk celebrating&nbsp;Credit to the Nation: Jewish Immigrant Bankers and American Finance, 1870–1930. Historian Rebecca Kobrin uncovers a powerful and often overlooked story: how Jewish immigrants, shut out of traditional financial institutions, built their own systems of credit to survive and thrive in the United States.
Arriving from the Russian Empire at the turn of the twentieth century, these immigrants created networks of lending that enabled others to secure passage to America, establish businesses, and gain a foothold in a new society. Drawing on rich archival materials in Russian, Yiddish, German, and English, Kobrin traces how these grassroots financial practices not only sustained immigrant communities but also reshaped New York’s urban and economic landscape. Their investments fueled real estate growth across the city, even as speculation contributed to the dramatic collapse of institutions like the Bank of United States during the Great Depression.
At once a story of innovation and caution,&nbsp;Credit to the Nation&nbsp;connects the past to the present, asking what happens when access to credit is denied and how marginalized communities respond.
Kobrin will be joined in conversation with Michael R. Cohen, Executive Director of the Grant Center for the American Jewish Experience and Stuart and Suzanne Grant Professor of the American Jewish Experience at Tulane University.
About the Speakers Rebecca Kobrin&nbsp;is the Russell and Bettina Knapp Associate Professor of American Jewish History at Columbia University and Co-Director of the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies. A leading scholar of modern Jewish migration, her work spans international migration, urban history, American religion, and diaspora studies. She is the author and editor of several award-winning books, including&nbsp;Jewish Bialystok and Its Diaspora, recipient of the Jordan Schnitzer Prize, and a co-leader of the acclaimed Historical NYC Project, a digital map visualizing demographic change in New York City from 1850 to 1940. She has also received Columbia University’s Lenfest Distinguished Faculty Award for excellence in teaching and mentorship.
Michael R. Cohen&nbsp;is Executive Director of the Grant Center for the American Jewish Experience and Stuart and Suzanne Grant Professor of the American Jewish Experience at Tulane University. A historian of American Jewish life, his scholarship explores Jewish politics, identity, and communal leadership in the United States. He is the author of&nbsp;The Birth of Conservative Judaism: Solomon Schechter’s Disciples and the Creation of an American Religious Movement, and his work has appeared in numerous academic journals and edited volumes. In addition to his research, Cohen is an engaged public historian and educator, frequently contributing to conversations on Jewish history and contemporary issues.

God Doesn’t Relapse is a raw, unflinching memoir of addiction, redemption and the faith that turned a man’s worst mistakes into a life of purpose. The $10 admission includes his book, which will be mailed to attendees after it is published in August.

Founded in 2005 by pianists Vassa Shevel and Inessa Zaretsky, the Phoenix Chamber Ensemble has become a vital part of the New York classical community, presenting more than 70 public concerts at the Center for Jewish History. The ensemble has garnered a devoted following with its innovative programming and sensitive interpretations, earned an international reputation presenting concerts in Russia, Poland, Italy, and other European venues, and collaborated with numerous acclaimed guest artists, including clarinetist David Krakauer, the Grammy-nominated Enso Quartet, the Tesla Quartet, members of the Jasper String Quartet, the New York Little Opera Company, the Metropolitan Opera, and New York City Ballet.

Tutu School exists to make space in the lives of children, 6 months to 8 years old, for creativity and joy. We do one thing – provide very young students with a magical introduction to ballet – and we focus all of our energy on doing that one thing in the highest quality manner possible. This means that every aspect of your child’s experience at Tutu School- from the sparkling spaces to the smiling faces – has been specifically tailored to the needs of even the tiniest dancers. Our carefully crafted curriculum was designed by dance professionals and developmental specialists to ensure that precisely the right amount of ballet technique is being introduced to students at exactly the right time, and not any earlier than their little bodies and young imaginations are ready for it. Importantly, our Tutu teachers receive thoughtful training in our curriculum and in the best ways to support young dancers, whatever their age, developmental stage, or level of experience. We believe in introducing students to ballet in a way that makes sense for their bodies and their development, but that also nurtures their creativity and love of music and movement. We want to cultivate an appreciation of the arts and to provide students with a solid technical foundation to study ballet more seriously later on (if they choose), but more importantly, to give them the kind of formative early enrichment experience that will serve them well in whatever dreams they follow later on.
