VIDEO: 'Felt Bodega' Opens In Chelsea

The artist Lucy Sparrow has rebuilt the classic NYC bodega, filling a shop with 9,000 items made of felt.

MEATPACKING DISTRICT, NY — New York City's newest bodega comes with all the staples of its predecessor — ice cream, sodas, and even a bodega cat — with one twist: Everything's made of felt.

This plush bodega is an immersive and store-sized art installation by the artist Lucy Sparrow. The shop, housed inside The Standard, High Line hotel, is filled wall to wall with thousands of bodega necessities, all handcrafted from felt.

Sparrow's imagined chain of Big Apple bodegas is named "8 ‘till late," and you can meander through the store and even purchase the felted necessities when visit. The entrance to the bodega is located inside The Standard's Garden Room at 69 Little West 12th St. The bodega is open daily until June 30.

The shop has 9,000 individual items, many of which are available for purchase, and took four planes to move from the U.K. to the Meatpacking District, according to Sparrow. Although you'll find all bodega usuals inside, you won't find bodega prices for these miniature pieces of art: A pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream sold at "8 'till late" will cost you about 50 pounds, according to the listing on Sparrow's site.

"8 'till late" is an American take on a similar project that Sparrow created in 2014 in her native England. That project, "Cornershop," reimagined neighborhood stores with thousands of handcrafted felt projects.

She said that although corner shops in the England and bodegas in NYC served similar functions, she'd noticed a few significant differences.

"We absolutely don’t have cats in corner shops, but I’ve got a cat in the bodega because I was told that I needed one," she said in an interview with The Standard.

The bodega is Sparrow's biggest installation to date, according to her website.
