Watch: Fire Scorches Top Story Of Chelsea Apartment Building

A fire engulfed at least one top-story unit of an apartment building in Chelsea Monday.

CHELSEA, NY — Firefighters battled a blaze on the top story of a six-story apartment building at the 100 block of West 23rd Street in Chelsea Monday afternoon.

The fire engulfed at least one unit, tearing through the roof and sending up billowing black smoke that could be seen for miles. The fire broke out at 3:29 p.m. Monday, and more than 106 firefighters helped battle the blaze, said a New York Fire Department spokeswoman.

“There are no injuries at this time,” she said.

The firefighting effort shut down traffic at West 22nd Street eastbound at 7th Avenue.
