Commack Remains Undefeated, Defeats Ward Melville 3-1

8-0 season start puts the Cougars in first place.

The Cougars captured first place in Division 1 and an 8-0 overall record, but not without a bitter battle and a tough offensive effort.  The defense was sloppy, but not bad enough to put Commack in any real danger. An early penalty (about 15 minutes in) put the Cougars in a lead they wouldn't cede, despite fouls and an overall aggressive match.

Score: 3-1 Commack

Records: Commack: 8-0 (6-0), Ward Melville 5-2 (5-4)

The Heroes: The Offense. Max Aronica and Adam Tamburello were responsible for the win, and offensive pressure was key to the game.  They kept the pressure off a defense that was lacking.

The Turning Point: Max Aronica's second goal protected the lead, but the game really turned at the start of the second half when tempers started to chill.  Commack played a bit more laid back at this point, though things weren't really all that wrapped up until the Cougars had something to show for the fight.

The Quote: "This was for first place, and it was an ugly win," said Coach Patrick Friel. "Neither team played a quality game. We have a bulls-eye on our backs now, but hopefully we'll rise to the occasion."

The Bottom Line: Commack's latest battle to stay undefeated was just that. Both teams played aggressively and got some great looks at goal, but the Cougars just toughed this one out. The game puts Commack in first, and they wouldn't be there if they didn't get their hands dirty today.

Key Stat: Fouls. This game was a physical, even for a first place battle. Commack's first goal was the result of an early foul, as Max Aronica scored on a penalty. Commack had its share of contact, and walked away with a few yellow cards to show for it. Both teams had players walk off with injuries or sit after committing a foul.
