As BP Wrestles With Spill, Commack Gulf Sees a Bump

Local station workers see "many new faces" since the oil spill.

At Commack's Gasoline Heaven, a Gulf station at 2088 Jericho Turnpike, the summer spike in gas prices hasn't scared customers away. And for that, the owner thanks BP, the British petroleum company responsible for a destroyed oil rig that continues to pump millions of gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico.

"People are saying 'I'm glad you're not BP," owner Rudy Massa told Patch.

Gasoline Heaven is located 1.2 miles from the BP station on the Smithtown side of Commack, and is the nearest gas station to the BP station at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Cornell Drive.

Station attendant Joe, of Smithtown, has also seen business rise.

"Business usually slows down on Fridays, and towards the end of the day, but yesterday despite the higher prices it was a lot busier than it's been. You see a lot of new faces," Joe said.

Sharon Schlosser, of Commack, who was pumping gas during the interview, did not have an opinion on the ethics of visiting a BP station.

"This is my regular station," Schlosser said.

Kings Park resident Dena Gunn, agreed with Schlosser.
