Holy Family Regional School Takes First Place in Long Island Robotics Competition

Holy Family Regional School (HFRS), a local Catholic school in the diocese of Rockville Centre serving parishes in Kings Park, Commack, Hauppauge, and Dix Hills, took first place overall in the First Annual Adelphi University Long Island Middle School Robotics Competition on April 27, 2013.

In an effort to help promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), Adelphi University sponsored its First Annual Long Island Robotics Competition inviting several schools throughout Long Island to participate. Competing teams received a common Lego Mindstorm robotics kit, along with the competition rules. Over a two month period, each team had to design, construct, and program their robot from scratch to complete a very challenging course. Additionally, teams were required to deliver a formal oral PowerPoint presentation to describe their design, challenges and lessons learned.

Under the guidance of advisor and coach Joe Reid, the HFRS team captain Sachin Devasahayam (HFRS) along with members Christopher Reid (HFRS), Stephen Tambini (HFRS), Jerry Pascual (Adelphi STEP), Carrie Smithing (Adelphi STEP), and Amari Spleen (Adelphi STEP) worked long hours to build and program their award-winning robot. Nicholas Reid (shown above), also a Holy Family Regional School student, participated on the Adelphi STEP team and took 3rd place overall.

Mrs. Jenkins, Holy Family Regional School principal, stated “We are so proud of our students. It is great to see this type of enthusiasm and fun while reinforcing math and science learning objectives.”
