Lowe's Expected to Submit Revised Plans for Commack Cinemas

Smithtown Planning officials say that after months of silence, Lowe's is still interested in building a store on the site of the former Commack Multiplex Cinemas. 

David Flynn, Smithtown's assistant planning director, said he expects that Lowe's will submit revised plans to build a store on the site of the former Commack Cinemas by this Thursday. The national home improvement chain still holds an interest in building a new store in Commack. 

"Lowe’s keeps going back and forth in terms of what they are supposed to do. They are supposed to submit plans for a slightly smaller building as of Thursday," Flynn said. 

If Lowe's does submit revised plans for a storefront on Thursday, the issue could have a public hearing before Town of Smithtown's Planning Board by the end of the year. 

A spokeswoman for Lowe's said the company is still going through the approval process for the Commack location and as such its policy is "not to comment until all matters are finished." 

Lowe's announced its plans to buy the Commack Multiplex for $13 million as part of a 20-acre parcel in May 2010. But the company’s plans became uncertain last fall when it abandoned plans to build a store in Huntington Station and announced plans to close 20 underperforming stores in 15 states.

Commack Multiplex Cinemas has been closed since September 2011.
