Man Dies In Suffolk House Fire
An officer got to the home but could not save him, police say. The man's mother and three others got out on their own.
COMMACK, NY — A man died in a Commack house fire on Tuesday, Suffolk police said.
Officers from the Second Precinct went to a Spinner Lane home around 6:45 p.m. after a 911 call. A patrol officer arrived and entered the burning house where Jean Laurent, 40, was still upstairs. The officer was unable to remove Laurent from the residence. Laurent, who lived in the home, was later found and pronounced dead.
Four other occupants of the home escaped the house when the fire started.

Bertha Glaude, 67, Laurent’s mother, was able to exit the upstairs apartment before the police arrived. Three downstairs residents, Bruce Alber, 58, Bruce Alber II, 40, and Nicholas Alber, 34, also exited the house prior to police arrival.
Glaude and Nicholas Alber were both taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The Second Precinct officer was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital to be checked.
Police are investigating what caused the fire.
