Have you seen the AT&T commercial with the kids in a classroom and a moderator asking them which is better, more or less. The response from the little girl, "we want more, we want more" makes me laugh every time I see this.
In an odd way, this mantra brings me to why Prop 2 is a good idea for Commack students, parents, teachers, and taxpayers. "More" furthers a democratic process, while ""fewer" may restrict the process. "More" creates more discussion and more resolve in the ultimate decisions.
Here's 5 reasons to consider when voting:
- It's harder for special interest groups or master manipulators to gain control over 7 people, than 5. "More" can better insulate your Board from corruption. (Do we need to go on.)
- I did a quick search of large neighboring districts and all have at least 7 Board members: Northport; Syosset; Brentwood; HH Hills; Sachem; Smithtown; Huntington. Some have 9. What do they know that we don't.
- Many hands make light work.
- Commack is a massive district. Should we not consider our population when considering the number of Trustees representing our interests.
- Diversify. This is a new century and there are many new ideas out there. We need to embrace the new era and avoid complacency. 7 viewpoints are better than 5, as we explore new educational horizons, and create positive change for the kids.
