WikiSpaces Introduced into HS Classrooms

The Internet-based cooperative learning environment will be introduced, in addition to e-boards, for the new school year.

An online collaboration portal, WikiSpaces, will be added to the Commack curriculum for the 2010-2011 school year, David Weiss, assistant superintendent for secondary education, said.

The service costs about $1,000 per building.

E-boards have been used by the district for several years, Weiss said, and these spaces will enhance the experience. Teachers are not required to use these online learning spaces, however, they are encouraged to do so.

Eric Ablett, of Wikispaces, said the prices of the systems vary, according to this scale and said the best aspect is that users can collaborate on projects in an organized manner. The schools using this system can designate the spaces as they see fit, Ablett said – with one per classroom, one per building or even one per school.
