NORTH BABYLON, NY - Belmont Elementary School Nurse Cheryl Williams was named the Top Female Author in the 2019 Top Female Author Awards poetry category. Williams earned this award for her book, "A Collection of Poems: A Journey Through Life," which she published in December 2018.

With 60 poems featured in the book, Williams submitted her poem "A Web of Deceit" for the contest. She was chosen out of hundreds of contestants by a panel of judges. While dealing with life’s struggles as a child, Williams said that writing and music were tools that brought her fulfillment and healing. She wanted to use her poetry to share her story and potentially help others.

"I chose a poem format where each poem addresses different struggles in life and different ways that you can cope to overcome the struggles that you face," she said.

After receiving the honor, Williams said she was shocked but excited. She hopes the award will draw more attention to her book so that it can help more people dealing with hardship. Williams has been a North Babylon resident since 2006 and came to work for the North Babylon school district in 2016 before taking a permanent position at Belmont in 2017.
