March 4 2021

The Black History Committee at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently
created a Black History Month “mini-museum” for display in the main lobby. The
committee was started this year by 15 Frost students, along with advisers Darin Harrison
and Sara Watkin-Fox, with the goal of providing education and awareness of the African
American experience.

For the 2021 Black History Month celebration, student-created morning
announcements were delivered during the week preceding Martin Luther King Day and
throughout February. Schoolwide challenges include learning about and writing letters
directly to the Ruby Bridges Foundation, and studying and reacting to inspiring quotes by
famous African Americans.

With the help of teacher Carey Okurowski, the Frost Black History Committee also
put together a Black History website that will be updated throughout the year to raise
awareness of Black history. The site includes student-developed “biographies” of famous African Americans, reading suggestions for students throughout the school district, word searches, photos of the committee’s activities and a special student-created video tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
