This was a different but positive year for the student directors and actors of Deer Park High School’s annual One Act Play Festival, traditionally a fall theater showcase for different short plays directed by students. Delayed due to snow and COVID-19, it nevertheless persevered and was recorded for viewing in early 2021, featuring five memorable comedies: “Wine Candles, and Anthrax,” “Rumple Schmumple,” “Zombies R Us,” “Graceland” and an original play by senior Alexa Arbore titled “En Garde.”

“We were planning a virtual play season over the summer in anticipation of the modified school year,” said Michael Moriarty, the festival’s co-director along with Catherine Singer. “Luckily, we planned for all of our rehearsals to be virtual and it worked out very well. This has been one of the most well-prepared One Act Play festivals we’ve ever had. The kids rehearsed with Catherine and I, but they also did a lot on their own. When we finally got together to record the festival for the families, it didn’t take many times to nail a good recording as all of the takes were great. As different as it was, we all had fun putting the show together.”
