First Graders Work and Play at SSCM

First graders at work and play at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park

First graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park managed to fit in plenty of work and play in the short Thanksgiving week. They participated in a video conference on what it was like for the Pilgrims to sail to America on the Mayflower. It gave the students insight into what life was like in Plymouth and what skills they needed in order to survive. The class found it both interesting and informative and they rounded out their learning with some related hands-on activity, making beaded bracelet the way Native American Indians would have long ago.

SSCM held their Annual Thanksgiving Feast for the students and Mrs. McGerald’s first grade class was on the ready with a little added treat of their own, as they spent the morning working on Thanksgiving turkey cookies, complete with candy corn feathers! That afternoon, the students turned their attention to other animals, as the class science topic of the week centered around amphibians, reptiles and fish! From reading to math to nature to cookie-crafting, the students enjoyed a very full week, indeed! Their next big venture will be continuing preparations for the annual pre-Christmas school Mass that the first grade presents each year. They’ve been practicing their readings and songs and will be ready to roll in time for their Mass on December 19th. On behalf of SSCM, we hope you all had a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!!
