Kick Starting a Love of Learning
From nature to history and creativity to yoga, First Graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park are loving their learning.
After moving from the basics of learning letters and numbers in Kindergarten, first graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park are ready for the big time! And veteran first grade teacher, Mrs. McGerald, always makes a love of learning the top priority.
Over the past month, SSCM first graders have been enjoying a hands-on approach to all kinds of learning. They created their own edible school buses out of pretzels and graham crackers while learning the rules for school bus safety. They drew and colored bears while learning all about what our furry friends do and eat in the woods.
Welcoming in the new fall season, first graders learned all about Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman), who introduced apple trees to so much our country in the 1790’s. In honor of fall’s favorite fruit, first graders also enjoyed making homemade applesauce from scratch (and tasting it, of course), painting apple trees and making their own edible apple tree treats, complete with green icing for leaves and red M&M’s for apples.
